Cahernane House

A graceful stately home, the Cahernane is brimming with historic character, tucked away in secluded grounds bordering the Killarney National Park, close to the town of Killarney.

The approach to the Cahernane along the long private avenue is lined with tall trees, giving an impression of the tranquil country elegance of the hotel itself. Cahernane House was built around 1877 and was home for five generations of the Herbert Family who were related to the Earls of Pembroke, owners of the Muckross Estate. Cahernane House is an elegant Jacobean styled manor house of the Victorian era, similar in architectural style to Muckross House, with a modern but sympathetically styled extension.

Inside the Cahernane's grand and comfortable public areas are filled fine antique furnishings and original features. The reception area is filled with warmth and character from its intricately carved oak fireplace, while nooks and crannies are highlighted with charming little antiquities.

Each of the guest rooms have been tastefully furnished and are beautifully appointed. Those in the modern section have a slightly more modern appearance and benefit from extra space and more up to date facilities including some with Jacuzzis and private balconies. While those within the original house are full of character and old world charm, fitted with elegant antique furnishings and luxurious bathrooms.

The Cahernane's restaurant, the Herbert Room offers award-winning cuisine from a daily-prepared menu using the very finest of fresh local produce, blending Irish tradition with continental imagination. This is complemented by a wide selection from the impressive wine cellar, which forms an attractive backdrop to the atmospheric cellar bar.

As well as awards for its food, the Cahernane has also rightly won awards for its Hospitality and Comfort, and staff are very courteous, professional and friendly.

Cahernane House is located just a short walk from the centre of Killarney, but far enough away to escape to the tranquillity of the national park. While for golfers, the Cahernane is well placed for golfing at Killarney and Ballybunion.

Guest Reviews of Cahernane House

WE WERE AWED!! THE GROUNDS, THE HOUSE EVERYTHING WAS SPECTACULAR.

Vicki Barlean on Tue Nov 18 2008

Closed early for the holidays. We were re-booked last minute to the Behron Hotel.

Steven Cole on Tue Nov 18 2008

Breakfast was so so, the staff was friendly. The bathroom was great but the room overall seemed old. The windows were very loud with the wind.

Nicole Carr on Mon Oct 13 2008

The room was small compared with other hotels of similar rating we have stayed at. TV reception was poor (not that we particularly bothered with TV). There was no tea/coffee making facilities in room although these were available by phoning reception, something I would be loath to do in the early hours of the morning when I sometimes need a coffee. Only one armchair was provided in the room (there was no space for another), and although there were comfortable public areas we never observed them being used. Sometimes one just wishes to relax in private. The big plus for this hotel was the friendliness of the staff. Overall, however, we were disappointed.

lift out of order so no access to bar or restaurant room very large but wheelchair access to bathroom difficult

Mr John Dewhurst on Tue May 27 2008

On arrival were told wedding on and therefore we were not able to dine there as we had hoped.

Ms Nikki Randall on Sun May 25 2008

It was a disappointment to arrive at the hotel in the middle of a wedding reception and to find that there were no food or drink facilities available until late that night. Having to drive to Killarney center for a cup of coffee was not really acceptable to my 78 year old Mother.

Sheila Brennan on Mon Oct 8 2007

We did not like to be asked to wait outside the dining room at breakfast time until they were ready for us! Whilst it is a lovely hotel - we did think by comparison with other hotels which we used - the food and wine were overpriced.

Perfect setting. Great people! Food was perfection.

Susan Caputo on Tue Sep 4 2007

Beautiful place. Huge room with a view. The receptionist really made our stay fun by arranging for bikes for us at the hotel. The wait staff was oddly formal and unfriendly.

Donna Lee on Tue Sep 4 2007

A beautiful location, lovely room. No spirit in the hotel. Cooking was precious...

Barbara Mcdermid on Tue Aug 14 2007

This is a fine property and excellent rooms for all. Breakfast was excellent and we ate in the bar area for dinner instead of their finer dining. But all was good. They had a snooker table for entertainment which we found enjoyable after dinner and it was certainly close to the ring and Kerry but not in the city. With a little help and some advert. I would guess that this facility could gain a greater rating, etc.

Solid property, although some issue with water leakage through windows and ceilings, small areas of worn carpets, but to be expected with older property. Easily rectified, but awful weather did put issues to the fore.

Very elegant castle, warm rooms with great view on Killarney lakes.

Alice Moio on Wed Dec 13 2006

Beautiful old traditional hotel in Kilarney, very peaceful and scenic.

Elaine Fitzpatrick on Wed Dec 13 2006

An oustanding hotel from every aspect- definitely our favourite

David Henderson on Sun Oct 1 2006

Outstanding place to stay.

Greg Davis on Thu Sep 28 2006

Please ignore previous comment - wrong place. The wide bed was fantastic and we found the hotel very easy for getting to places. It was rather noisy with all the fire doors slamming early in the morning when a party had to leave before 8am but the food was excellent. I would be nice to return for longer next time

Sarah Bult on Wed Jul 12 2006

Beautiful manor house in quiet location. Rooms with balcony or patio very well furnished. Elegant public rooms.

Paul O'Brien on Thu Feb 23 2006

One of my favorite. The decoration is warm. The view on the fields and the mountain will certainly coorespond to our guests.

Carole Razet on Thu Feb 23 2006
