Athenaeum House Hotel

Overlooking Waterford City on the banks of the River Suir, Athenaeum House is a stylish boutique hotel, mixing Georgian elegance with modern chic and providing the ultimate in comfort and panache for the discerning traveller.

Dating back to the 1800s, the original Georgian House has been added to with sympathetic modern extensions, while inside the broad halls and drawing rooms of Athenaeum House are laid out with chic interiors, and contemporary designs using dark browns, deep purples, blues and golds.

Each of the bedrooms and suites at Athenaeum House has been superbly decorated, each with its own sense of style and panache. Rich colours and sumptuous furnishings add huge character, while rooms are equipped with all the essential facilities. Some suites boast four-poster beds, freestanding bathtubs or relaxing Jacuzzi baths and many have views across the River Suir.

Athenaeum House also features the exclusive eatery, Zak's Restaurant. Stylishly laid out, Zak's long narrow gallery runs virtually the length of the hotel, with large French windows opening out to a balcony and gardens overlooking the river and Waterford Harbour. The mouth-watering menu at Zak's fuses traditional and contemporary cuisine, with a great emphasis on fresh local produce. A sample of mains includes Double Pork Loin Cutlet, grilled and nestled on Pancetta and Shallot Dumpling, Parsnip Puree, Caramelised Apple & Calvados Cream Sauce or Seared Monkfish set on Zucchini Ribbons, accompanied by White Carrot Mouse & Buttered Vegetables & Crustacean Oil. The extensive wine list provides the perfect compliment and on weekends a resident pianist adds tone to the whole congenial atmosphere.

Athenaeum House is well placed for touring the South East of Ireland and the historic town of Waterford, famed for its Waterford Crystal. There are also a number of golf clubs close by at Waterford Castle and Faithlegg.

Guest Reviews of Athenaeum House Hotel

I liked the hotel ... the bed was too soft but the food was fabulous

First of all, absolutely no idea of how to get there. We rode around Waterford for an hour looking. Finally found a cab driver (from Jamaica no less), who gave us directions. There was only one person in the office handling Registration/Checkout and no one was at this desk after a certain time. You were given a phone extention to call with problems. Also, the first hotel we had been in with an "energy control" devise on the lighting in the room. Of course there were no explanations given upon checkin. Later found a note written on the inside of the "key envelope." The "retro" look of the room was horrible.

This hotel is a long way out of town (not within walking distance). It also doesn't really cater for children, facility wise.

If you are wanting a quiet, out of the way place to stay, the Athenaeum would do you well. It was warm and inviting, but it is out of the center of downtown Waterford, and there is no easy transport into the city. Driving in Waterford was not easy, but the view across the river was beautiful and the staff treated us well.

Clean modern accomodations. Friendly staff. I little far from town. I can't comment further..we were really tired when we got in.

The view was nice. It was very confusing trying to get there, there needs to be much clearer directions.

driving to city would be recommended unless guests would prefer the half hour walk. rooms are very spacious & have a luxurious feel to them due to materials used. a calm, relaximg place and yet there is still much to due. the city is near by, walks and tours are organised. river views from the hotel- relaxation spot. the hotel is sleek and contemporary but has the stunning counrty like views (river and greens)

A very nice place to stay when visting the south east coast, Many areas are very accesibile from this area, the staff were very obliging offerin to help organise any activities the guest may want to do. The piano in the bar is played by a pianist every nite during high season, A bit out from Waterford city but should take no longer than 5 mins in a car.
