The Céide Fields are located twenty miles from Ballina
at Belderrig, Ballycastle in north Co. Mayo. Covering 24 square miles, the Céide
Fields are the most extensive Stone Age site in the world.
Discovered
in the early 1980's, they are believed to be about five thousand years old. They
represent the oldest enclosed farmland discovered in the Western World (even older
than the pyramids). The megalithic farming settlement was swallowed up by bogland,
building and field walls. They are part of an on-going archaelogical investigation
to discover more about the civilization of the time.
In 1993, a visitors centre was opened and has attracted 20,000 visitors to view
the historic landscape as well as the magnificent Céide cliffs and Dún Briste
sea stack.
