Sneem

header-view-from-towncentre.jpgSituated on the Northern side of Kenmare Bay, lying between the towns of Kenmare and Waterville, is the picturesque village of Sneem. Resting near the foot of a spectacular mountain range dominated by the 2,245 ft Knockmoyle, this village with its unusual "hour-glass" shape is divided in two by the River Sneem and traversed by a bridge which is the focal point of the village.

Located on the famous Ring of Kerry, Sneem provides an ideal base for anyone exploring the Kingdom of Kerry or West Cork. A previous winner of the Bord Failte run "Tidy Towns" competition, the main source of income for this little neat village is tourism. With its immaculately kept greens, colourful houses and haven of activities, Sneem is a must to visit. Its popularity is reflected by its long list of famous personalities who have visited the village including: Princess Grace of Monaco, Bernard Shaw, Charles De Gaulle, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Charlie Chaplin to name but a few.

One will never be bored in Sneem with plenty to see and do. Sea Kayaking is very popular in this area and is available at a number of locations. The most magical of these are, probably, Oysterbed and the Parknasilla Islands. With numerous families of seals, various species of birds and tree covered islands, the area provides spectacular scenery and ideal conditions for the Kayaker. Many other activities are also available including: golf, horse-riding, wind-surfing, water-skiing, sea-angling and sailing.

The town really comes to life during the first week of August, when there is non-stop music entertainment to celebrate the main event in the town's calendar - "The Welcome Home Festival", a festival in honour of the many people who left the shores of Ireland allowing them and their descendants to celebrate in style.
